The Role of Communications in Africa’s Socio-Economic Development

43 countries | Over 750 communications professionals

A conversation. That’s what we tried to foster here about a topic that is often overlooked and poorly researched: Do communicators have a role in Africa’s development? How do we get the metrics to assess this role?

The conversation took place in various places, formats and languages. Via our hashtag #AfricaCommsWeek and through amazing events in various countries.

In N’Djamena, the workshop presented by Fortius Communication was all about communication & entrepreneurship.

Hundreds of students absolutely rocked the JKUAT Multimedia & Development Fest in Kenya while, in Mozambique, the FSD Africa Communications Group was exploring practical ways to enhance the role of communications in financial inclusion.

Ever heard of the EU communication strategy on Africa? It was the topic of a Brussels seminar hosted at the European Commission.

On Africa Day, a conference in Lagos was co-hosted by The BBC Companyand IE Business School and explored how strategic communications can deliver socio-economic value in Nigeria.

A stimulating debate powered by AMMC (Association Marocaine du Marketing & de la Communication) in Casablanca made the case for communication as a driver for change in Morocco and Africa.

The African diaspora was also engaged in a seminar at the African Union embassy in Brussels, followed by a very inspiring evening debate presented by Roots Events on the role of the diaspora media in all this.

In Lubumbashi, communications professionals were invited by Agence KD for an afterwork meetup to explore their contributions to local development in RD Congo, just before the F Project agency launched the closing event in Accra. If you missed those events, head to our Facebook page. Most were recorded live. You can also catch the replay of the 1st ACW webinar “Is the story enough?” co-hosted by Resonae Solutions and TakeOut Media.

The journey is not over! Join the conversation on social media and mark your calendars for AfricaCommsWeek 2018: 21 – 25 May 2018.
